Cubs Autumn Hike 2010

From 2010-10 Autumn Hike

By Ned and Gregory

Last week we went on a five-mile hike.  Everyone had to prepare for this huge trip. We walked from Selsdon Wood to St John the Baptist. When all of us arrived, we were told to pair up and walk to the bus stop. When we got on the bus we had to memorise symbols. When we got off the bus we walked all the way to Selsdon Wood and while we were there, we held maps and we had to navigate our way across fields and back to St John the Baptist. When we were in the wood we had to stick stickers on where we thought we were on the map.

A quarter of the way through the journey, we started to collect chestnuts from their prickly cases but we were only allowed to keep the big ones, otherwise we would have had loads. A while later we did a leaf competition where we had to make a creature only out of leaves. We made an emu and a mouse.

After a while it was lunch and we walked through some thin tracks and then crossed a road to get there, to Elm Farm. We had to eat next to cows.  This was not pleasant because one cow did a long wee and the other did something even worse! No-one ate much when cows did their business!

After lunch we walked a bit more and discovered a house in the middle of nowhere. While we were walking by, a big flock of birds became scared of our appearance and all flew away - it was like a gale of wind. We went down a path and came out of the wood.

We appeared near a load of shops and we went into the Co-op.  Some people bought fizzy drinks, others bought sweets and some people couldn’t buy anything because they hadn’t brought any money.

After passing the shops and going through fields, we finally made it back. When we returned to our church hall, we ate ice cream and Chocolate éclairs, which was tasty.  It was a good trip and we want to go on another one please!

We’d like to thank Akela and Des and all the other helpers for organising the trip.
